Care Week

Good morning, Tuesday!

Today is the beginning of this year's CARE Week. We wear black today to recognize skin cancer.

Skin cancer is defined as the uncontrollable growth of abnormal skin cells. This is usually caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet radiation from most commonly sunlight and tanning beds. Skin cancer can be treated effectively if caught early on, but it spreads quickly. So, if not treated soon enough, it can be fatal.

While skin cancer isn’t the deadliest or most common cancer, it’s still important to recognize it. Remember to hope for a cure, and have super Bobkat day!

Wednesday:

Today is day two of Care Week, so we wear purple to recognize pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is defined as a disease in which cancer cells are found in the tissues of the pancreas. Pancreatic cancer is caused most commonly by smoking, old age, and diabetes. It often starts as simple back or stomach pains. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal cancers, causing over 50,000 deaths a year on average. However, if caught early, there’s a chance it can be treated and cured if it hasn‘t spread to other organs.

Pancreatic cancer claims more lives than any cancer, so it’s very important to recognize it and its effects. Remember to hope for a cure, and have a fantastic day!

Thursday:

Good afternoon, everyone! Yesterday was our third day of care week this year. We wore green to recognize liver and kidney cancer.

Liver cancer occurs when cancer cells form on the tissue of a liver. It is caused by poor diet and most commonly alcoholism. People who’ve had liver cancer for five years or more have a 31% survival rate, though it can be effectively cured if caught and treated early on.

Kidney cancer is caused when a group of cancer cells forms in the kidney. It is unknown exactly what causes kidney cancer, though smoking, old age, and rare inherited conditions can increase the risk of getting it. About 50% of patients are cured if they are treated early on, but only about 11% of people survive once they reach stage four.

Liver and kidney cancer are both dangerous, which is why it’s so important to recognize and understand them. Remember to hope for a cure, and have a wonderful day!

Friday:

Good afternoon, everyone! Today is the fourth and final day of our Care Week this year. Today we wear pink to recognize breast cancer.

Breast cancer occurs when cancer cells form on the breast. It occurs in mostly women, but men can get it on rare occasions. The main cause of breast cancer is unknown, but your risk of getting it can increase if you are out of shape, smoking, and drinking large amounts of  alcohol. Early stages of breast cancer are very treatable, and the chances of surviving years after diagnosis are still some of the highest of any cancer.

Even though it’s not the most dangerous, breast cancer is still the most common type of cancer. It’s important to recognize it and understand it. Thank you to everyone who participated this week. Remember to hope for a cure, and have a great day!
